Their bumpy start the only gets bumpier the more time they spend together。 But when an opportunity presents itself for Scottie to get back at her toxic ex (and climb her school’s social ladder at the same time), she bribes Irene into playing along。 Hijinks, heartbreak, and gay fake-dating scheme for the ages。 From author Kelly Quindlen comes a new laugh-out-loud romp through the ups and downs of teen romance。

This is a really fun little rom-com of a novel。 Exactly the sort of LGBTQ+ representation that is often missing, particularly in YA。 Recommended for lovers of romantic comedy, high school stories, girls loving girls (while having normal relationship problems, not those wholly focused on coming out or homophobic drama), vaguely Christmas-y themed stories (their hometown is basically Christmas-themed), and contemporary YA。ARC provided by the publisher in exchange for review via NetGalley。

This is a book I was seriously looking forward to ever since I found out about it。On paper, it sounded like everything I loved。 Enemies-to-lovers, making rivals jealous, queen bee involved, all the best stuff。 It’s just that the execution is rather predictable。First of all, things I liked。 Let’s start with Irene。 I think she was a wonderful character。 She was tough, smart, skilled and determined, and I loved her grit and snark ability。 At the same time, she had flaws, but she was aware of them, This is a book I was seriously looking forward to ever since I found out about it。On paper, it sounded like everything I loved。 Enemies-to-lovers, making rivals jealous, queen bee involved, all the best stuff。 It’s just that the execution is rather predictable。First of all, things I liked。 Let’s start with Irene。 I think she was a wonderful character。 She was tough, smart, skilled and determined, and I loved her grit and snark ability。 At the same time, she had flaws, but she was aware of them, and it was a joy to read how she managed tough situations, getting through without seeming inhuman。 She was clearly someone hardened by life, somewhat cynical, but still good at heart。 Even before the book shows off her good side, she is never presented as completely evil, which I appreciate for a queen-bee character。 Later, when she revealed herself more, I only liked her more。 Intelligent and hardworking, and knowing where she wanted to take her life, grappling with problems in her way, but I truly believed in her and her ability to achieve what she wanted。Second, I liked some of the supporting characters。 Honey-Belle and Danielle were both nice subversions of stereotypical „best friend“ and „queen bee second-in-command“ types。 Especially Honey-Belle could have used some more presence in the story。 Only annoyance was them having to be paired off with the two token guys in the friend group (which just felt very token。 Why not pair them up with each other?)On the other hand, I was not impressed with Scottie, and when you start getting annoyed at the view point character, something has gone wrong。 She had a lot of informed ability going on。 We were told she is smart and had good grades。 She just never put that supposed intelligence into practice。 This problem I had is quite difficult to put into words, I feel, but it seems like she works on plot intelligence。 She kept doing dumb things, patronizing people, making bad decisions, being strung along, and I GET that she was supposed to be hung up over her ex, but eventually, it became incredibly painful to see which dumb decision she would make next。 When she did something right, and this is also weird, it felt out of character with all the other times we saw her。 Especially next to Irene, who actually had emotional intelligence, she seemed quite… incompetent? It seemed unreal how often she made dumb decisions her narration TOLD US she knew were stupid, it blowing up in her face, and Irene forgiving her for it。Essentially, when Scottie’s sister kept scowling at Irene, fearing she would break Scottie’s heart, I was wondering if she didn’t have it the wrong way around。Which brings up another problem。 All the families that appeared in this story gave off a Stepford Wives kind of feel。 They were all kind, and happy, and understanding, and never got into fights。 Even the SIBLINGS were basically unquestionably supportive of each other (I think there was one little squabble that lasted all of a page), and it just felt unreal。 Nothing wrong with showing happy families, but at least SOME friction is normal。Then there’s the humor, such as it is。 In a lot of respects, a lot of this book feels like it needs a laugh track。 Situations are engineered that feel like scripted jokes, or token „insert heartwarming moment here“ moments。 Characters are said to laugh loud at things that aren't really funny。 There's a "only one bed" scene with no real necessity, which defeats the entire point of this trope。 This is another thing that makes this feel unreal and lifeless。 The „scheme“ at the end when Irene and Scottie get back together feels like it belongs to a fan parody of a cheesy disney movie。 The same situation as the cheesy movie, but sort of pretending to score points by being self-aware。 I guess some people like that sort of stuff, but to me a lot of the humor lacked wit, and just felt cringey。It also seemed overly dramatic。 The evil mean girl had no problem whipping up incriminating material of every unfortunate situation to cause problems when the plot stalled。 I also would have wished for a bit more resolution for the situation with both evil exes。Overall, it had a lot of potential, and it brought up some interesting topics。 I liked the diversity of the cast, that it was not just two american white ladies like so many other stories, although, again, in some places it felt a bit like that typical „every character is as diverse as possible“ which in itself can be problematic。 It also dealt with topics of abusive relationships, dependencies and letting go, it just felt like it was simplified in a lot of ways。 Characters (well, alright, just Scottie) kept being incredibly stupid about it, which I guess can be excused with „well, she’s a teenager in love“。 The relationship between the main characters was surprisingly boring, and it felt like some important bits got skipped over。 It felt like there was a lack of affection between them, both physical and emotional。 It was imbalanced, too, with Irene doing much more for Scottie than vice-versa。 Why did Scottie never show up to cheerleader practice? Why is the only scene of Irene showing her ability used to have something go wrong to inconvenience her? Why did she give up her dream in the end, when it was clear she had put much more thought into it than Scottie had? Again, teenagers in love, but I still hope Irene finds someone more worthy of her in the future。 。。。more

Here are my faves: - enemies to lovers - forced proximity/only one bed - cheerleader and basketball player romance - fake dating scheme The nuanced conversations regarding race and prejudice! I loved the sly little commentaries made by Irene and other characters (towards Scottie in particular) that called out Scottie's privilege and called her in at the same time。 While Scottie is certainly a member of The Community, she is often the first one to cast judgments or make foot-in-mouth comments about communities that she is not, in fact, a member of。 For example, Irene, her nemesis, is not only the only BIPOC cheerleader on the squad, she's also the ONLY cheerleader competing for the coveted Student-Athlete of the Year award at their high school。 Scottie learns so much about being an ally through tough conversations with Irene and others about checking her privilege at the door and recognizing others' struggles。 Summary: “A little sweet, a little sharp。” —Booklist, starred reviewHigh school nemeses fall in love in Kelly Quindlen's She Drives Me Crazy, a queer YA rom com perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli and Casey McQuisten。After an embarrassing loss to her ex-girlfriend in their first basketball game of the season, seventeen-year-old Scottie Zajac gets into a fender bender with the worst possible person: her nemesis, Irene Abraham, head cheerleader for the Fighting Reindeer。Irene is as mean as she is beautiful, so Scottie makes a point to keep her distance。 When the accident sends Irene’s car to the shop for weeks’ worth of repairs and the girls are forced to carpool, their rocky start only gets bumpier。But when an opportunity arises for Scottie to get back at her toxic ex—and climb her school’s social ladder—she bribes Irene into an elaborate fake- dating scheme that threatens to reveal some very real feelings。From author Kelly Quindlen comes a new laugh-out-loud romp through the ups and downs of teen romance, perfect for fans of Becky Albertalli。 。。。more

This was a very odd read。 Everything about it: the setting, the tone, the character names, felt like a Hallmark Christmas special or a 2020 DCOM。 Except there was a lot of cursing。 I enjoyed that it was hate-to-love and fake dating combined, but make it sapphic。 It was great to see a strong female athlete on page。 But everything else about it just felt slightly off-kilter

This book is wonderful。 One of my favorite by Kelly so far。 This has all the makings of a Love Simon like cinematic experience。 It fits the tropes of fake dating and high school jealousy but also follows through with the emotion and is just generally so fun!

This book was such a delight!! Kelly Quindlen not only portrays an incredibly sweet love story, but she also perfectly captures the complexities of first love and heartbreak, as well as navigating those emotions as a teenager。 It's about discovering who you are and learning to love yourself first and foremost before loving others。 It's about opening up and trusting that the other person will reciprocate。 It had its share of cheesy one-liners and cliches, but in the end, it was so much more than This book was such a delight!! My heart feels hashtag BLESSED that this book was delivered early (whoops) and ready to journal for a thousand years about all the lessons I learned in these 295 pages。 Do your heart a favor and read it as soon as you can。 。。。more

She Drives Me Crazy, by Kelly Quindlen, is one of those books that's just。。。okay。 It isn't terrible, but it isn't great - it's not, frankly, a book that will stick around in my brain very long。 I love enemies to lovers AND fake dating tropes in romances, so both in one story should be *chef's kiss* - but I found the execution of these tropes a little ham-fisted。 The set-ups to make plot points happen were often a stretch at best, and the dialogue bordered on clunky in several places。 I did like She Drives Me Crazy, by Kelly Quindlen, is one of those books that's just。。。okay。 It isn't terrible, but it isn't great - it's not, frankly, a book that will stick around in my brain very long。 I love enemies to lovers AND fake dating tropes in romances, so both in one story should be *chef's kiss* - but I found the execution of these tropes a little ham-fisted。 The set-ups to make plot points happen were often a stretch at best, and the dialogue bordered on clunky in several places。 I did like the main characters, basketball-playing protagonist Scottie and her nemesis/love interest, cheerleader Irene。 They did genuinely have good chemistry, even when the plot got heavy-handed。 And I liked Scottie's BFF, insecure overachiever Danielle。 Too many besties in YA romances like this are forgettable, only there to listen to the protagonist's problems, without much personality of their own, but Scottie was actually a halfway decent friend and helped Danielle out with her own issues as well, which meant we got to actually read about said issues。 Other side characters, though? Not my favorites。 Scottie's family, specifically, felt like cardboard cutouts designed to be quirky, yet without actually being so, a complaint I had about the town as a whole。 The idea that the whole town is Christmas-themed (for historical, town-founding reasons) just。。。didn't amuse me。 And everything felt like it was trying too hard to be aggressively wacky, in supposed contrast to uptight, bougie, shallow Candlehawk (think Parks and Rec's Pawnee vs。 Eagleton)。。。but the comparisons were inconsistent, the wackiness never landed, and it all just felt unnecessary and unfunny。When it comes down to it, that ends up being my biggest problem with the book - I felt like I was being told "laugh here" when I didn't want to laugh, or "this plot moment makes sense" when it didn't make sense。 Piece after piece of the story simply didn't land for me。 It isn't like this book was terrible - it just didn't work。。。at least for me。Thank you to NetGalley and Roaring Book Press for the advance review copy。 。。。more

The absolute sharp wit of these girls is enviable, I wish I was that quick when I was in high school。Behind all of the tropes, this book has absolutely excellent commentary on toxicity of female rivalries, the unfairness of boys vs girls sports, not being afraid of confrontation, learning how to show up for the people you care about, and how to love yourself。 It’s an absolute gem and I highly recommend it。 。。。more

Phenomenal。 Just spectacular。 I don’t think I have read a single sapphic rom com before that I have loved THIS much。 It is something so fun and special。 This book is a rom com, but it is probably the most realistic view of a relationship I’ve seen in one with all its struggles and heartaches。 It shows these girls being messy, making mistakes and growing from them。 It is just everything I’ve ever wanted from a romance book and I am just so glad t Okay。 Okay。 Okay。 THIS book? I received an advanced copy of She Drives Me Crazy from the publisher so I could share my review with you!Distractions have a way of ruining Scottie Zajac’s life。 First, she was distracted by her ex-girlfriend during a basketball game (who happened to be playing on the opposing team), costing her the match。 Then, while in the parking lot, Scottie gets into a fender-bender because she was analyzing the details of her team’s loss。 Now Scottie’s distractedness has given her nemesis, Irene Abraham, I received an advanced copy of She Drives Me Crazy from the publisher so I could share my review with you!Distractions have a way of ruining Scottie Zajac’s life。 First, she was distracted by her ex-girlfriend during a basketball game (who happened to be playing on the opposing team), costing her the match。 Then, while in the parking lot, Scottie gets into a fender-bender because she was analyzing the details of her team’s loss。 Now Scottie’s distractedness has given her nemesis, Irene Abraham, yet another reason to hate her。 Irene, the beautiful yet cruel captain of the cheerleading squad exists on a different social stratum than Scottie, among the top-tier elites of the school。 Their lives have rarely intersected, but when they do, things always end messily。 But, when their well-intending mothers concoct a scheme for the two girls to carpool to school until Irene’s car is repaired, Scottie realizes that she will be spending far more time than she would like with Irene。 After spending more time together, the two concoct a mutually beneficial scheme to pretend to date, even though they have little in common。 If Scottie wants to make it through the school year unscathed, she will have to learn to get along with Irene, who may be more complicated than she would’ve ever guessed。You can get your copy of She Drives Me Crazy on April 20th from Roaring Brook Press! She Drives Me Crazy is the first book I have read this year that I would like to give a six-star rating! Since the majority of book-rating scales don’t allow me to give actual bonus stars, I will have to settle for giving this book a glowing five-star recommendation。 This story was easily one of the sweetest sapphic stories I have read in years。 Scottie and Irene both felt extremely real to me, pulling me into the narrative instantly! Their quick banter and interactions kept me laughing to the very last page。 Kelly Quindlen brought new life into well-worn romance tropes, combining enemies-to-lovers and fake-dating into one compulsively readable story! My Recommendation-If you need a swoon-worthy rom-com to brighten your day, you absolutely need to pick up a copy of She Drives Me Crazy! I was in a bit of a reading slump when I picked this book up, but Scottie and Irene banished my reading woes。 She Drives Me Crazy would be perfect for fans of Casey McQuiston and Sophie Gonzales! 。。。more

Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。I loved this book。 This is the sapphic rom-com YA content we need more of! The focus is on relationships and goals, not trauma or coming out (though it does touch briefly on these topics they are minor and well supported)。 I loved our two fierce, soft, and genuine main characters, and their wide group of friends。 I enjoyed the high school dynamics of sports, friends, and figuring out the future for what Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review。I loved this book。 This is the sapphic rom-com YA content we need more of! **I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review。She Drives Me Crazy is a fun romcom filled with movies references, music recs, and high school turmoil。 Scotty is a senior basketball player who hates that the girls team is looked down on by everyone in town。 She recently was dumped by Tally when she went to the rival high school with a better basketball reputation。 When everything seems to go wrong on the first game of the year, Scotty's car is hit in the parking lot by Irene。 Ir **I received a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review。She Drives Me Crazy is a fun romcom filled with movies references, music recs, and high school turmoil。 Scotty is a senior basketball player who hates that the girls team is looked down on by everyone in town。 She recently was dumped by Tally when she went to the rival high school with a better basketball reputation。 When everything seems to go wrong on the first game of the year, Scotty's car is hit in the parking lot by Irene。 Irene is a queen B cheerleader with all the reputation。 Scotty sees a plan form to get back at her ex, get the credit her basketball team deserves, and to help Irene out with the fender bender。This book was such a great read。 Scotty was what you would expect from a high school senior who just wants things to go well for once。 I loved watching her grow and learn to accept her authentic self。 Her relationship with her sisters was also so heartwarming for me。 I loved that they were always there for each other during the hard moments。 The relationship between the two girls was also fun。 Polar opposites with similar humor is always a fun one to read。 Irene was such a strong character that didn't really take anything from anyone, but still struggled to find her mother's acceptance。 All in all, this was such a fun romcom。 I found myself breezing through the book with ease。 。。。more
